How important is it to the Lord that we be unified with other believers? It’s so important that as His crucifixion drew near and He had one last moment of prayer with the Father, He emphasized three times His desire that we be unified. Knowing that Jesus greatly desired it, shouldn’t unity with other Christians become a major priority for each of us?

Christians hold conflicting doctrinal beliefs, and we never will be unified on all aspects of doctrine. The basis of our unity can be only one thing: the desire to discover and do what Jesus commanded. He said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). That verse contains the secret to unity. If the focus of your life is to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus, then you can have unity with any believer who wants those same things. The more closely we follow Christ, the closer we grow in unity with others.

The problem is that most American Christians make their Christianity about everything but following Christ. Sound doctrine is important. But it was never meant to be our primary focus. Following Christ was always meant to be our chief focus. As we dedicate ourselves to following Jesus by discovering and doing what He commands, we move closer to Him. And the closer we move toward Christ, the closer we move toward unity with one another.

To this end, a growing number of Christians, churches, and organizations are working to encourage churches and individual believers to begin to focus on discovering the teachings of Christ and applying them to every area of life.1
